Melanie Hammick, MBACP
Devised by Carl Rogers and also called "Client-Centred" or "Rogerian" counselling, Person Centred Counselling is based on the assumption that a client seeking help in the resolution of a problem they are experiencing, can enter into a relationship with a counsellor who is sufficiently accepting and permissive to allow the client to freely express any emotions and feelings. This will enable the client to come to terms with negative feelings, which may have caused emotional problems, and develop inner resources. The objective is for the client to become able to see himself as a person, with the power and freedom to change, rather than as an object." (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy)
Melanie Hammick completed her training in 2005. She worked as a counsellor for 3 years within the NHS and also worked part-time as a student counsellor in a local college. She has been in private practice for the last 6 years. She has a wide experience of working with clients of all ages and backgrounds. Clients come to counselling for many reasons. Often a life event, such as bereavement or divorce is forcing them to re-evaluate who they are, or they are struggling with anxiety, depression or relationship problems. Sometimes clients don't really know what the problem is, they just know they want to feel better about their lives.
The first step is the initial meeting which takes place in a quiet and private upstairs room at the Beaminster clinic. This is an hour long session where the client has the opportunity to describe the difficulties they are experiencing, and to explore if counselling would be helpful for them. Finding the right therapist to work with is crucial, so this first meeting gives the client the chance to meet Melanie and decide if they are going to feel comfortable working with her. Usually the next step is to book in for 4 weekly one hour sessions. Melanie offers short and long term counselling.
